Centenary

Oakfield in the 1930s

This year, we are celebrating the club's centenary. To mark the occasion we have made great efforts to renovate the pavilion, grounds and tennis courts, and there are also some extra special events taking place.

Events

The club's centenary celebration weekend (click here to view photo gallery) on 9th-10th July 2011 was a huge success, with a fantastic turn-out for the Edwardian-themed open day on the Saturday. Edwardian fancy dress was strongly in evidence and, amongst the many fun games and activities on offer, the period exhibition tennis matches (complete with authentic wooden racquets) and bowling competitions were big hits.

The speed gun and longest rally competitions were hotly contested, with Tom Wigley recording the fastest serve, at an impressive 105mph, while Angela Hall and Reg Morton clocked up the day's longest rally. Juniors also had their own competitions, which were enjoyed by all, and Theo Ayres bagged himself a family ticket for a Huddersfield Town match as first prize.

Children and juniors were given free tennis coaching by Mike and Louise Armitage, and the afternoon celebrations were officially opened by Irene Brook and Brian Lacy, two of the club's longest serving members.

Sunday was member's day, and another great turn-out saw Bill Ward triumph in the bowling competition, while Irene Haigh and Peter Sutcliffe won the tennis mixed doubles.

Key centenary projects

Pavilion: The pavilion has been restored to its former glory with a much-needed paint job and the replacement of some rotten timberwork.

Courts: The carpet courts have been lifted and levelled with new tarmac. The white lines have been replaced and installed using a more sophisticated form of bonding. New sand has completed the process and, after a short bedding in process, the courts should play much better.

Fencing: New fencing has gone up on the Beechfield Road side of the bowling green. New rigid mesh fencing has also been installed along the side of the near carpet court.

Special mentions must go to Club President Steve Wood (above right) and Club Secretary Ken Roys (above left), who worked tirelessly on renovating Oakfield for its 2011 centenary. An amazing effort, and well above and beyond the call of duty!
